The Mystic Outdoor Arts Festival takes place this weekend

MYSTIC, Connecticut (WFSB) – The Mystic Outdoor Arts Festival is taking place this weekend.

It is one of the biggest events of the year in the village.

“Two years ago it was huge. Last year we had a little bit of rain,” said Bruce Flax, executive director of the Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce.

Hopefully it will stay with us this time and the crowds will come.

In 2021, the festival featured 275 booths from artists, creatives and vendors.

This year there are 65 new ones.

“We like to do this to create variety, because many people come back to see the artwork,” Flax said.

One of the festival’s biggest attractions has only been added in recent years: the theater part.

“This is our way of embracing our neighbors,” said Steve Sigel, executive director of the Garde Arts Center.

The Garde Art Center in New London partners with other theaters to bring artists to the stage at Mystic River Park.

“We are excited to bring them across the river so they can show what they can do to the thousands of people who will enjoy this day,” Sigel said.

Mystical companies like Kenzie’s Fudge also participate.

Owner Dana Sadler sets up a tent every year.

About a thousand soft pretzels are expected to be consumed this weekend.

“There are tons of people coming in. Tons of people coming here for the ice cream, the candy store is packed, lots of kids, lots of people that we see here every year,” Sadler said.

There are already no parking signs in Cottrell Street.

The festival stretches from the city center to the shipyard.

Parking is limited, but there are alternatives.

“I think everyone who comes to Mystic is always concerned about parking. There’s plenty. Maybe walk about five blocks out of town. You’ll find one. Just respect the signs and the neighbors’ lawns,” Flax said.

The Chamber recommends that you download the Go Mystic app.

You’ll get parking recommendations and see where to find food, artists and deals.

“Go to the special offers section in the app and you will see different restaurants and shops offering special deals and discounts to arts festival attendees,” Flax explained.

15,000 to 20,000 participants are expected.
