Vicksburg: America’s most beautiful historic small town

VICKSBURG, MS – Vicksburg has won the Newsweek Readers Choice contest for best historic small towns.

The contest began on July 18, when Vicksburg was listed as one of the candidates. Since then, several community partners, including the Vicksburg Daily News, have launched a community effort to vote for the appointment.

In an update published a few hours ago, Newsweek updated the list and Vicksburg is number one.

In their article, Newsweek wrote, “Looking to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life? Then it’s time to discover the allure of America’s charming small historic towns. Imagine picture-perfect main streets lined with quaint shops, historic buildings and inviting cafes, with stunning surrounding scenery. These towns aren’t just destinations; they’re experiences that invite you to slow down and get back to your roots. None of these towns will disappoint, but it’s up to you to decide which ones make the final list.

These 10 historic small towns were selected by our expert panels and staff and voted by readers as the best of the best.”

Vicksburg is in the winning spot. Newsweek writes: “Past and present intertwine in Vicksburg, where visitors flock year-round to the sprawling Vicksburg National Military Park. The battlefield was the site of a terrifying Civil War siege and is dotted with hundreds of monuments worth visiting. In addition to the battlefield and antebellum homes, Vicksburg maintains a vibrant culinary scene of fresh seafood, Southern comfort food and farm-to-table delights.
