Toddler hospitalized after being accidentally served alcohol in restaurant

SALINAS, Calif. (KSBW) – A Northern California couple is warning parents to be careful about their toddlers’ drinks when eating out.

The family said their toddler was mistakenly served alcohol at a restaurant, which led to a visit to the emergency room.

They said a waiter accidentally gave their child wine at Fujiyama, a Japanese restaurant in Salinas, California.

KSBW spoke to the manager, who said the whole thing was a mistake.

They said the wine served came from a container of cooking wine labeled as apple juice.

“She was staggering, she was falling over, she was leaning against the walls, she couldn’t hold her head up and her voice was slurred,” said Noemi Valencia, the toddler’s mother.

The parents knew something was very wrong. They tasted the juice and knew it wasn’t apple juice.

They took her to the emergency room and discovered that their two-year-old was drunk.

In fact, they said his blood alcohol level was 0.12 per mille, well above the legal limit for driving.

They hope the restaurant learns from the mistake.

“Take the appropriate precautions and be careful when storing or labeling things so that this doesn’t happen to anyone else, because otherwise it could have been a lot worse,” Valencia said.

The little girl has now fully recovered.

Valencia encourages parents to taste what is served to their children.

Meanwhile, the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control said it was aware of the incident and was cooperating with local authorities.
