Starting Monday, an important traffic warning will be in effect on I-81 for the airport exit

The New York State Department of Transportation advises motorists that Exit 27 (Syracuse Airport) on southbound Interstate 81 will be closed beginning Monday, August 26.

The closure means that anyone travelling south to the airport will have to take a detour to get there.

Motorists are advised to follow the posted detour to Exit 26 (Mattydale), then south on State Route 11, north on Route 11, to Interstate 81 north to Exit 27 (Syracuse Airport) to Airport Boulevard.

The closure is being held because eastbound traffic on Airport Boulevard (Colonel Eileen Collins Boulevard) will be diverted to the westbound lanes between South Bay Road and the Airport Boulevard ramp to northbound Interstate 81 in the city of Salina beginning Monday.

The ramp from Airport Boulevard westbound to I-81 southbound will reopen.

These adjustments and closures will last until the end of November.

Construction activities are weather dependent and may change according to conditions.

Drivers are asked to exercise caution when driving through the construction site and to obey all traffic control systems, including signs and flagpoles.

Motorists are reminded that fines for speeding in work zones are doubled. Under the Work Zone Safety Act of 2005, convictions for two or more speeding offenses in a work zone can result in driver’s license suspension.
