Starlink introduces kit rental option in the Kenyan market

Starlink has launched a new rental kit option in the Kenyan market to make its satellite internet services more accessible. The new kit now allows customers to rent the hardware for KSH 1,950 (USD 15) per month, plus a one-time activation fee of KSH 2,730 (USD 21). The move addresses concerns about high initial costs that have hampered the gradual rollout since Starlink entered the Kenyan market in July last year.

Originally, customers had to pay a deposit of nearly KSH 89,000 (USD 690) for the kit, which has since been reduced to KSH 45,500 (USD 350) as Starlink expanded distribution through local retail chains. The new rental option gives access to a 50GB monthly data plan with speeds of up to 200Mbps, challenging local internet providers who offer similar packages at almost twice the price. An unlimited monthly data plan is also available for KSH 6,500 (USD 50).

As internet access and affordability become essentials of life, customers are now opting for the most viable options. Starlink aims to meet this need with its key strengths of providing high-speed, low-latency internet services. The company is constantly striving to facilitate customer adoption of its services. Moreover, the company is growing in popularity as its offerings continue to provide quality internet access to all.

This is evident in the rapid growth of Starlink subscribers in the country. Data from the Kenya Communications Authority bears this out. When the company launched in July 2023, it had just 405 subscribers. Two months after Starlink launched in Kenya, that number has more than tripled and now stands at 1,354. By March 2024, the number of satellite internet users has grown to 4,808. This trend will intensify as affordability and high-quality products become Starlink’s key drivers of market penetration and adaptability.
