Gasoline prices in Canadian cities fell an average of six cents per litre of regular gasoline last week. The decline follows a prediction earlier this month that peak summer prices were over.
Sarnia, Ont., saw a double-digit decline, with prices falling 16.1 cents between Aug. 15 and Aug. 22. Kingston, Ont., Gatineau, Que., and Abbotsford, B.C., were among the cities with the biggest price reductions. North Bay, Ont., was one of the few markets where prices rose.
The broad-based decline follows rising fuel prices in July. According to the latest inflation statistics from Statistics Canada, gasoline prices rose 2.4 percent compared to June. Compared to the same period last year, prices rose 1.9 percent in July. The agency says this was partly due to reduced supply due to the closure of a refinery in the US Midwest.
According to DesRosiers Automotive Consultants, sales of new light vehicles increased in the Maritime provinces last month, with the research firm reporting 161,000 units sold.
“The Atlantic region in particular saw strong sales increases this month, with increases estimated at 41.2 percent in Newfoundland, 39.7 percent in Prince Edward Island, 31.6 percent in Nova Scotia and 22 percent in New Brunswick,” DesRosiers researchers wrote on Wednesday.
