iPhone and iPad users in the European Union will have much more choice when it comes to what apps are on their devices as Apple faces pressure from regulators. Even the seemingly immovable Apple App Store will end up on the chopping block if a user makes that choice, thanks to new Digital Markets Act (DMA) rules.

In an update to developers, the company says that “we’re making changes to the browser selection screen, default apps, and app deletion for iOS and iPadOS for users in the EU by the end of this year.” These changes will be implemented to coincide with the release of the upcoming iPhone 16 lineup and add a twist to the setup process that hopefully won’t slow down users who are accustomed to a more streamlined experience.

At least Apple is trying to make choosing all those default apps a little easier. In the Settings app, which will be introduced with iOS 18 and iPad OS 18, there will be a new section where users can choose what they want to set as the default app for tasks like password management, messaging, keyboards, and more.

These changes will have a big impact on both Apple and its users. The company relies on its partnership with Google, which sees the search giant’s offerings as the default option in Safari. It’s likely that the revenue Apple relied on with that search deal will be significantly reduced now that Safari is no longer the default web browser in the EU.

It will be interesting to see how users react when this new reality takes hold and whether it prompts other regions to make the same demands of Apple.
