Smoke continues to rise above a popular barbecue area in West Columbia.

City Limits Barbeque, 1119 Methodist Park Road in West Columbia, landed on Southern Living’s recently released “Best New Barbecue Joints of 2024” list. The list, compiled by noted culinary writer Robert F. Moss, featured 22 barbecue joints from across the Southeast.

City Limits, owned by grill master Robbie Robinson, came in at number 4. Known for its Texas-style beef brisket, Carolina-style pork barbecue, and a variety of decadent sides and desserts, City Limits was the only Midlands restaurant to make the list.

In Southern Living’s rankings, Moss praised City Limits for its pork ribs, calling them a “showstopper.”

“Cooked directly over coals for two hours and seasoned only with salt, they have an amazingly rich bite that makes them undoubtedly the best ribs in the Carolinas – and perhaps even the entire South,” Moss wrote.

Southern Living’s latest list also included four barbecue restaurants from other parts of South Carolina, including Palmira Barbecue (No. 1) in Charleston, King BBQ (No. 5) in Charleston, Rancho Lewis (No. 14) in Charleston and Smoking Butt Heads BBQ (No. 16) in Spartanburg.

Robinson started City Limits as a food truck in 2016. City Limits then found a more permanent location on Methodist Park Road in West Columbia in 2023. The restaurant received national recognition earlier this year, as Robinson was a finalist for Best Chef in the Southeast at the prestigious James Beard Foundation Awards.
