McAllister’s on York Street will close its doors for the last time on August 31, owners said.

Co-owners Andrew D’Agenais and Robert Godfrey recently announced the decision on Facebook, expressing gratitude to their staff, family and the many regulars who have supported the restaurant over the years.

“We have met so many lovely people and are grateful to everyone who has supported us. There are some events in our lives that need to take priority and we need to step back,” the post from McAllister’s on York reads.

McAllister’s on York opened its doors at 11 York St. in downtown Hanover on November 13, 2021. The restaurant quickly became known for its upscale, casual dining experience, offering a diverse menu of Italian, French, American and Asian cuisine. The rooftop bar, Bar E11even, offered guests a unique place to enjoy cocktails and panoramic views of the surrounding area.

The inspiration for McAllister’s came from developer Jordan Ilyes, who enjoyed eating at Handsome Cab Restaurant and Wine Bar, D’Agenais and Godfrey’s first restaurant in York City. When Ilyes approached the pair about opening a new restaurant in a rehabbed apartment building in Hanover, they jumped at the chance and named the place after the Richard McAllister Hotel, which once stood on the site. Godfrey told The York Dispatch in 2021 that they used some of the hotel’s original tiles in McAllister’s.

Over the years, McAllister’s on York has become a beloved part of the community, known for its food and special events, including themed costume nights and bar crawls. The owners announced that these events will go ahead as planned even after the restaurant closes.

Two events are planned before the restaurant closes, including a drag brunch on August 24 and a limoncello-making class on the last day of business.

The restaurant recovered from near devastation after a truck drove through the dining room late last year, causing dramatic damage. According to the owners, no one was injured, but the restaurant had to cover much of the repair costs itself. During that time, valued customers returned and signed the wall of the establishment to show their support.

In their closure announcement, D’Agenais and Godfrey said the restaurant needed to close so the couple could focus on other things in life. They invited everyone to stop by before the end of the month to say goodbye.

“Andrew D’Agenais and Robert Godfrey would like to thank our staff, family, guests and friends for the nearly three years we have had the pleasure of operating McAllister’s on York. We have met so many lovely people and are grateful to all those who have supported us. There are some events in our lives that must take priority and we must step back. Saturday 31 August will be our last day open and McAllister’s on York will be permanently closed. We hope to see you all before we close. xoxo to you all.”
