3 State Parks in Illinois are among the USA’s hidden gems – NBC Chicago

As summer comes to a close and fall is just around the corner in Illinois, where can you enjoy the state’s natural beauty?

Three Illinois state parks have secured a spot on HomeToGo’s top 50 list of travel destinations and insider tips this season.

Starved Rock State Park was ranked 7th among the most popular destinations. Rock Cut State Park was named the second best state park and Pere Marquette was named the sixth best state park.

The list of most popular destinations is based on the website’s “State Park Index.” The index itself is compiled based on factors such as popularity, size, trail quality, wildlife quality and scenic appeal.

For the list of hidden treasures, the same criteria were used in combination with search volume.

Starved Rock State Park just outside of Chicago scored above average for wildlife, hiking trails and natural beauty.

Rock Cut State Park is in Caledonia and Pere Marquette State Park is in Grafton.

The two made it into the top 10 along with parks in South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Missouri, Oklahoma, Georgia, California, North Carolina and Oregon.

The exclusive list includes numerous other beautiful and scenic destinations within and outside the Midwest.

It is characterized by a diverse landscape and terrain, from coral reefs to grasslands.

“As more travelers become interested in visiting state parks and national parks, this index serves as a guide for vacationers looking to plan the perfect nature getaway without venturing too far from home,” said Eleanor Moody, travel expert and spokesperson for HomeToGo.
