Walmart, Target and Dollar General recall candy

A voluntary candy recall announced in May has now been upgraded to a Class I recall, the most stringent recall level issued by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA).

Palmer Candy Co. of Sioux City, Iowa, recalled its white-coated candy on May 5 because it may be contaminated with salmonella. The product is available in a variety of retail packaging, including pouches, bags and tubs.

The candy was distributed to Walmart, Hy-Vee, Target, Dollar General and retailers in Alabama, California, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

No cases of illness have been reported so far.

Palmer Candy has been informed by its liquid coatings supplier that there is a potential for contamination from an ingredient that may have been contaminated by one of their suppliers.

Production of the product was halted in May while the FDA and the company conducted an investigation.

The FDA classifies the severity of recalls after they are carried out and assigns them to three levels: Class I means that consumption of the product can cause serious adverse health consequences or death; Class II is granted when the risk of serious adverse health consequences following consumption is low and the consequences are temporary or medically reversible; Class III means that consumption of the recalled product is not likely to cause adverse health effects.

A dairy-free dessert is also being recalled. GS Gelato & Desserts, Inc. announced on August 6 that a limited quantity of Full Circle Market’s Coconutmilk Chocolate Almond Crunch dairy-free frozen dessert was available in 1-pint paper cartons.

The product contains undeclared cashews and was distributed between April 18 and July 11 to retail stores in the following states: New York, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, New Jersey, Connecticut and Rhode Island.

No side effects of the product have been reported.

GS Gelato was informed by one of the retail stores that two different products were indicated on the product carton and lid. GS Gelato conducted an investigation which determined that a single batch of pints of cashew milk product was placed into the Full Circle Market brand pints of coconut milk during the manufacturing process.
