WATSONVILLE, Calif. (KION-TV) – On Friday, Watsonville police released bodycam video of a police-involved shooting on Aug. 3.

“As part of our ongoing commitment to transparency and accountability, we are releasing video of a critical incident related to the officer-involved shooting that occurred in the front parking lot of our police station on Saturday, August 3, 2024,” the Watsonville Police Department wrote.

The video shows the first 911 call that a man was threatening his three-year-old stepdaughter with a knife outside the police station, as well as footage from a body camera, a police car and security cameras. The video also shows the arrest of murder suspect Joshua Gonzalez, who is 25 and who, according to police, was “struck multiple times by gunfire.”

Gonzalez showed up at the police station that same evening, threatened to harm his child, then ran at an officer, who then shot him before he was taken to a trauma center, police said. It was later discovered that Gonzalez’s partner, Lizbeth, had been murdered and her body was found in Santa Cruz near Eureka Canyon and Grizzly Flat roads, the video says.

According to police, Gonzalez, who is currently in custody, is charged with murder, attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, endangering a child and obstructing the performance of police duties.

Police said they made the video public to “ensure compliance with California Senate Bill 1421.”

“This video is intended to provide an overview of the incident and circumstances,” Watsonville Police wrote on Facebook. “We understand the seriousness of such incidents and the importance of maintaining public trust.”

Police said an independent investigation into the shooting is currently underway.
