Arizona is on the list for the wrong reason

Arizona is on the list for the wrong reason

Fairground season is upon us and that means it’s almost time to immerse yourself in the thrill of rides, entertaining shows and lively animal competitions.

But let’s be honest: What’s the best thing about the fair? The food, of course. And Arizona is on Woman’s World’s list of the weirdest fairground foods in the USA.

What were we summoned for? For roasting scorpions! The rest of the country thinks we’re eating scorpions like it’s no big deal.

While this might serve to reinforce the cliche that Arizona is one big scorpion-infested desert, here’s the kicker: scorpions on a skewer have been off the menu at the Arizona State Fair for quite some time.

We spoke to Brianda Martinez, a spokeswoman for the Arizona State Fair, who said, “About 13 years ago, we had a vendor selling scorpions on a skewer. They also sold mealworm burgers and other types of bugs. But they haven’t come back since.”

But the 2023 Arizona State Fair offered some truly strange—and oddly delicious—bites. Here are our three picks for the truly weirdest foods at last year’s Arizona State Fair.

The Wildest Foods of the 2023 Arizona State Fair

Here are our recommendations for the most unusual foods at last year’s Arizona State Fair:

  • Spicy Cheetos Cheese Pizza: A white slice garnished with pickles and fiery Hot Cheetos seasoning.
  • Pickled Tamale Bites: Tamales stuffed with cucumber and cheese, served with a side of nacho cheese.
  • Birria Tosti Elote: Birria with sweet corn, butter, mayo, cotija cheese and hot sauce, all in a Tostitos bag.

If you’re curious to see what’s on offer at the 2024 Arizona State Fair, you don’t have to wait long. The fair will take place on the weekends of September 20 through October 27.
