The Where I Live series aims to showcase our diverse city and region by putting its many vibrant neighborhoods in the spotlight. Each week, a local resident invites us in and tells us what makes their neighborhood so special. Have we been to your neighborhood yet? Get in touch to tell us your story. If your story is selected and published, you will receive a $250 grant.
I have always loved the Shavano Park area and after graduating from the University of the Incarnate Word I decided to move here. After living here for over two years now, I am obsessed.
The neighborhood offers the perfect balance between a quiet suburban lifestyle and the hustle and bustle of the city. Living here means enjoying quiet days in addition to benefiting from the conveniences of daily life thanks to the community’s proximity to major highways that give us access to shopping centers, restaurants and entertainment options in The Rim and La Cantera.
I work from home, which means I’m cooped up indoors all day, so I’ve made it a point to get outside and get my 10,000 steps in. Shavano Park offers well-maintained walking trails that meander through scenic landscapes, allowing people to enjoy leisurely strolls or invigorating jogs in a peaceful environment. These trails are perfect not only for exercise, but also for socializing with neighbors or simply enjoying the natural beauty of the area.
When I first moved to the area, I met lots of lovely people on the trails who showed me the best routes and recommended great cafes and restaurants. Now I often meet the regulars and we chat a bit about what’s going on in our lives.
In addition to its scenic walking trails, Shavano Park is also home to a number of charming cafes, including my favorites Merit Coffee and Classic Rock Coffee. These cozy spots always offer a welcoming atmosphere that makes my day even better. The combination of accessible walking trails and inviting cafes enhances the sense of community in Shavano Park.
The neighborhood’s strong sense of community is evident in the well-maintained public spaces, exciting local events, and overall atmosphere of neighborly support. Every Sunday, the Shavano Park Farmers Market is held. It’s always fun to support the local vendors. My apartment complex sees several food trucks once or twice a month, which gives me a chance to connect with my neighbors and support local food trucks.
Living in Shavano Park is a truly enriching experience and I can’t imagine moving away anytime soon. It has everything I value: a tranquil atmosphere, ample opportunities for outdoor activities, a close-knit community, a sense of security, and easy access to a number of key amenities including shopping, dining, and entertainment.
Overall, Shavano Park is a desirable place to live due to its natural beauty, convenient infrastructure, strong community ties and excellent local services. I am happy to call it my home.
