Walmart is changing a lot of things for the better, like the nationwide rollout of Uncle Sharkii Poke Bars, which the Arkansas-based hypermarket plans to complete in the next few months, and its recent stock split – the first since 1999.

But the latest announcement is likely to garner more support than any previously mentioned initiative. In a conference call on February 20, Walmart President and CEO Doug McMillon hinted that prices would fall, saying: “In grocery, prices for eggs, apples and deli snacks are lower than a year ago, but higher in other areas such as asparagus and blackberries. Dry groceries and consumables such as paper goods and cleaning supplies are up by a mid-single-digit percentage compared to last year and by a high double-digit percentage compared to two years ago. Private label penetration has increased in many of our countries, including the United States.”

The statement reiterates what McMillon said last November when he said the supermarket chain could enter a “deflationary environment”: “We could see the price decline in food and consumer goods begin in the coming weeks and months,” McMillion said.

Considering that food prices have risen 25% since the start of the pandemic, according to Federal Reserve economic data, this is all good news—and certainly cause for celebration.

And that’s not all.

Walmart released a statement today announcing the price reduction on its popular Easter meal. “With customers still reeling from high grocery costs, Walmart is lowering the price of a pre-made Easter meal that’s available at an even lower price than last year,” the statement said. “Customers will be pleased to know the meal includes all the Easter staples, from ham and sweet potatoes to all the fixings for deviled eggs to apple pie and more. Best of all, the meal serves up to 10 people and is available at an average price of less than $8 per person.”

Even the Easter baskets – packed with “candy, fun accessories and paper grass” – are available at a significant discount of less than $20 each.

“We’ve made sure our customers not only get their complete meal at Walmart at a great price,” said Julie Barber, executive vice president of general merchandise. “We also offer great prices on the seasonal extras that really enhance the holidays and make them unforgettable memories.”
