Yuma Medicare Store hosts a seminar on the program

Sunrise anchor Samantha Byrd spoke with a local Medicare expert about the August 26 event.

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) – The Yuma Medicare Store is hosting an event next Monday.

Luz Rios, a Medicare expert from Yuma, discusses the importance of Medicare, especially for seniors and people with disabilities.

“It was originally set up as a way to help people not be financially burdened by their health care. But a lot of people don’t understand how to navigate the Medicare universe when they retire and they turn 65 or when they’ve been disabled for a certain amount of time. And that’s where I come in. I help navigate the insurance universe, which nobody wants to think about. Nobody wants, you know, nobody cares about insurance until they need it. But I’m here to be able to help people before they need it, so they know what’s going on. And you know, I love community, I love people. I love being able to share stories, share moments, have that connection with people. But for me, that’s a passion because that’s a way I can actually help people, especially when they’re completely overwhelmed with health care.”

She emphasizes that Medicare is difficult for people to understand and navigate, especially when they need it most.

“We’re not informed. A lot of people don’t know, and that’s the thing, especially when you retire, you turn 65, and you think, ‘Oh, I’ll just go to the beach and hang out.’ And then you think, ‘Oh man, I have to think about my insurance now.’ And that’s where I come in. The biggest challenge is not getting the right information. When you turn 65, you’re the most popular person in the world, you get a pile of mail, you get 20 million phone calls, you get bombarded with TV ads, and a lot of people just don’t know who to go to when they actually have questions they want to ask. So that’s my specialty. That’s what I do. That’s how I help people. Because with Medicare, all of those complexities, not knowing where to go or what to do, that’s where I come in and giving people options like, ‘Hey, this is how it works and this is what we can do.'”

Rios plans to address these issues in upcoming seminars that will provide a comprehensive overview of Medicare, including its parts (A, B, C and D), deductibles, copayments and costs.

In addition, she wants to help people on fixed incomes effectively manage their Medicare expenses.

The seminar will be held on August 26th from 4:00pm to 6:00pm at the Golden Corral. There will also be another seminar on September 30th from 4:00pm to 6:00pm at the Golden Corral.
