Man charged after incident at Campbell Airport – Shaw Local

GRAYSLAKE – A Zion man has been charged with trespassing at a Lake County airport due to a series of unusual circumstances, authorities said.

On August 20 at approximately 11:55 a.m., Lake County Sheriff’s officers were dispatched to Campbell Airport in the unincorporated community of Grayslake because a Toyota was speeding back and forth on a busy runway, a news release said.

The driver of the Toyota, later identified as Erik Deanda-Gonzalez, 30, of 3300 Holdridge Avenue in Zion, then parked his car and began entering the airport hangars, the release said.

When officers arrived, they found Deanda-Gonzalez in a plane parked near a tarmac. Airport employees told officers the plane did not belong to Deanda-Gonzalez, the release said.

Deanda-Gonzalez exited the plane and spoke with the deputies, and they all went back to Deanda-Gonzalez’s Toyota. The deputies were asking Deanda-Gonzalez questions about his conduct at the airfield when Deanda-Gonzalez allegedly turned around without warning, ran back to the plane and attempted to crawl back inside.

Sheriff’s officials pulled him from the plane and took him into custody, the press release said.

Deanda-Gonzalez offered no explanation for his actions and was taken to the Lake County Jail. Sheriff’s officials found ammunition in Deanda-Gonzalez’s vehicle, but no firearm, police said.

He was charged with trespassing on an airport runway (Class 3 felony), trespassing at an airport (Class 4 felony), resisting a peace officer (Class A misdemeanor), unlawful possession of firearm ammunition without a FOID card (Class A misdemeanor), and criminal trespassing (Class B misdemeanor).

On August 21, Deanda-Gonzalez appeared in court and was released on probation. His next court date is September 3.

The FAA was informed of the incident.
