Camden CAN offers a Food Garden Tour on September 12

CAMDEN — Camden CAN, a local climate group, is offering a Camden Food Garden Tour on Thursday, Sept. 12, as part of its effort to get the city talking, thinking and acting on climate change (“about the big changes in our weather, how we can address the causes and learn to deal with the challenges,” Camden CAN said in a press release.)

“Food production is one of the challenges we face and we can help ourselves by learning to produce locally and supporting each other and the small farmers around us,” the press release said.

A wide range of gardens of different sizes and types will be on offer: large and neat terraced gardens, small and playful ones, orchards, mixed flower and vegetable gardens, sunny and shady gardens, street and rear gardens, raised beds in shared accommodation, several group and community gardens and a hay bale garden which has been turned into a neat little garden plot covered with hay mulch. A lush and ancient woodland homestead will be open for viewing at the weekend.

“Growing food is becoming increasingly difficult around the world,” CAN said. “Droughts, floods and extreme temperatures are causing crop failures locally, regionally and globally. Commercial farmers and smallholders around the world have often struggled and even failed. Food prices are starting to show the impact. Learning to grow our own produce, even in small quantities, can at least help locally, but we need time to learn and develop these skills, especially as we need to adapt to the changeable and less predictable weather. Hopefully we can help encourage more residents to grow locally and make Camden more climate resilient.”

“Plus, it’s fun to visit gardens and talk about gardens. Come and look at our backyards and walk past our front yards.”
