Man claims Turo customer crashed his car. It gets worse

If you are not using your vehicle for an extended period of time, you may be able to rent it out to visitors, à la Airbnb.

Turo is the platform for this. With Turo, car owners can offer their vehicles for rent and either drop them off at the renter’s location or have them picked up by them.

One man said he listed his vehicle on Turo, but the people who borrowed his car then had an accident and drove it 200 miles away from where he and his car were located.

In a video posted to TikTok and viewed over 1.7 million times, content creator Glo (@itpaystoknowglo on TikTok) is shown confronting the renters of his vehicle, who apparently drove his car outside a Little Caesars pizzeria.

“These idiots crashed my car and NEVER said anything to me the entire ride (nothing), head shaker, and then they didn’t return my car. I had to use my tracker to follow these people,” the video caption reads.

In a follow-up video that has been viewed over 92,000 times, the author of the post states that the guests drove the car for three days after they had an accident without informing the host that they had damaged his car.

Eventually, the poster’s author told commenters that he left the guests at Little Caesar’s and drove home.

The Daily Dot contacted Global via TikTok direct message and a comment on the video, and Turo via email.

What about his damaged car?

While it’s unclear if Glo has repaired his car since the video was posted, insurance will likely cover the cost, according to information on Turo’s website. People who rent vehicles on Turo can optionally add insurance to their rental, but the site warns that these policies do not cover damage to the host’s vehicle. The guest’s own auto insurance would cover those damages before any additional insurance would kick in, the site says.

The platform also offers hosts the choice of additional insurance, so there are probably several options for insuring damage to the car.

Is an accident with a rental car different from an accident with your own car?

In general, a car accident involving a rental car is the same as an accident involving your own car. Most collision and liability insurance policies extend coverage to a rental vehicle, as well as deductibles and coverage limits. This applies as long as the car was rented for personal and not commercial use.

Some viewers commented on the video saying that this host’s experience was enough to deter them from listing their vehicles for rent on Turo.

“lol this stopped me from selling my car on Turo,” wrote one commenter. “I would mess with them fr.”

“I got an extra car outside and was thinking about registering it on Turo, now I’m having second thoughts,” said another.

“I could never put anything of mine on Turo… people ruin your stuff,” one commented.

Others wrote that they even went so far as to offer their vehicles on Turo, only to suffer significant damage to their cars as a result.

“This is exactly why I quit Turo in Chicago,” said one. “I wrecked 13 cars on Turo in five years.”

“My Turo car was declared a total loss literally the day after the guest picked it up,” said another. “They said it was fender bender and the car was a total loss.”

“Damn, I feel your pain bro,” commented another. “I had a 2022 Dodge Challenger R/T on Turo. The first time I drove it, the guy drove to Philly and crashed it. The front bumper is broken, the tires are worn out. And he also left it in some parking lot.”
