“In a class of its own” baseball stadium destroyed in fire in California

There is no crying in baseball – but when a historic baseball stadium went up in flames this week, tears were probably shed.

The Jay Littleton Ball Park in Ontario, California – which served as a filming location for the 1992 movie A league of its own – was destroyed in a fire that started Thursday evening, Ontario Communications Director Dan Bell said Weekly entertainment.

“It’s a terrible loss for our community,” Bell said. “Everyone here has either played on this course themselves or had relatives or children who played on this course over the years. A lot of people have played on this course in its 87 years of existence.”

The Ontario Fire Service confirmed in a press release to EW that the first fire engine arrived at the scene around 11:30 p.m. local time on Thursday before the fire service dispatched an additional seven fire engines and four trucks. A total of 51 firefighters arrived and extinguished the fire in just over an hour. There were no casualties or injuries.

“When units arrived, they saw the stadium’s grandstands completely destroyed,” Bell said. “So they went into attack mode and tried to put the fire out as quickly as possible, but since it was a wooden structure built in 1937, it was destroyed pretty quickly. So the end result is unfortunately a total loss of the grandstand structure.”

Bell continued, “The bleachers are all gone, the dugouts are all gone, everything that has to do with being a spectator on that field is gone. The field itself is intact, but every observation area for a game is destroyed.”

The cause of the fire is still being investigated, the fire department said in a press release.

Jay Littleton Ball Park built its stands in 1937, and the Ontario Orioles minor league team played there during their only season in 1947. Since then, the park has been the setting for a number of Hollywood productions, including 1948 The story of Babe Ruth1988s Eight men outside1992s A league of its own And The babythe 1999 The X-Files Episode “The Unnatural” and most recently Amazon’s TV remake of A league of its own.

“It just had the look and feel of a historic baseball stadium,” Bell said.

Aaron Matthiesen, president of the Ontario Eastern Little League, said the park was the setting for perhaps the most memorable moment in the original game. A league of its own. “The dugout here on the third baseline is where Tom Hanks said his legendary line, ‘There’s no crying in baseball!'” he told ABC 7.

Beyond his cinematic significance, Jay Littleton was a fixture in the Ontario community and is still used for Little League and high school games.

“We need to consider what we do with this field in the future,” Bell told EW. “Because it’s such a significant part of our city’s history, we’ll consider how we move forward with it.”
