Telegram founder Pavel Durov was arrested at Paris’ Le Bourget airport. He arrived in the French capital on a private jet from Azerbaijan, accompanied by a bodyguard and a woman.

The arrest and search warrant was issued because Durov did not cooperate with French security forces and did not properly moderate Telegram, making him an accomplice in crimes such as drug trafficking, terrorism, money laundering, child abuse, etc., reports French television channel TF1.

Durov traveled very little in Europe and avoided countries where Telegram is available, preferring instead to visit the Emirates or South America.

Durov is reportedly currently in custody and is due to be arraigned on Sunday.

“Pavel Durov will certainly end up in custody,” said a TF1/LCI investigator.

“He allowed countless offenses and crimes to be committed on his platform and took no steps to mitigate them,” a source familiar with the case analyzed.

The media reported that Durov knew he could be arrested in France, but still flew a private jet over Paris where he had to refuel.

He faces up to 20 years in prison and will have to answer to the court as a French citizen.

French intelligence services will attempt to access Telegram’s correspondence of criminal communities, as well as sanctioned companies and individuals.
