Randy Pitchford has finally retracted his outrageous previous comments after Borderlands 4’s release on Steam was confirmed

The eagerly awaited Borderlands 4 is set to launch in 2025. While fans are excited about the game, the Gearbox co-founder’s previous comments have resurfaced, sparking renewed discussion about the ongoing rivalry between Steam and the Epic Games Store.

Borderlands 4 has been confirmed to launch on Steam, a move that contradicts Randy Pitchford’s previous predictions that the Epic Games Store would overtake Valve’s platform. Nevertheless, the co-founder has echoed his previous comments again, but this time from a different perspective.

Borderlands 4’s future Steam release exceeds Randy Pitchford’s earlier prediction

In December 2018, Epic Games launched its own store where players could buy games, similar to Valve’s Steam. Borderlands 3 When it was released in 2019, it was available exclusively on the Epic Games Store, which was a big deal since Steam was the go-to place for many to purchase games.

What’s even more interesting is that Randy Pitchford has reiterated his decision to release the game exclusively on the Epic Games Store, putting his full faith in the new store and moving away from Steam.

In his earlier comments he said: “Epic’s investments in technology will far exceed those of Valve.“He added that Steam is a “die” store in 5-10 years. Obviously, that’s not the case, as Steam is by far the most popular place for most people to buy games in 2024.

Since Borderlands 4 has been confirmed for Steam, Randy Pitchford has commented on his past commentsand claimed that Epic Games had not used its advantage properly. He also stated that his long-term hopes for Epic Games “out of place and/or too optimistic.” Nevertheless, he expressed hope that the Epic Games Store could flourish and compete with Steam’s monopoly.

Although Randy Pitchford’s comments were not made with any malicious intent, it is clear that netizens have a lot to say about it. Social media has a mind of its own and as expected, fans are not going to let him go so easily.

X/Twitter in particular was flooded with users arguing with the co-founder and even labeling his recent comments on the earlier prediction as “get over.“Many have defended Steam, but given the company’s massive monopoly on games stores, it’s hard to argue against the idea.

Doesn’t matter, Borderlands 4 will be released in 2025although the exact date has not yet been announced. The spinoff game Tiny Tina’s Wonderland, published in 2022, hasn’t really hit the mark, so the upcoming game is a big bet for Gearbox Software.
