Crime Fighters 6abc: Corey Hayes-Williams was gunned down years ago outside a Kensington corner store; family seeks justice

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — About two years ago, a young man was gunned down in front of a corner store in Philadelphia.

Now his family continues to search to find out who is responsible for his death.

Stacy Moon said her son, 20-year-old Corey Hayes-Williams, has had a tough time in life. She asked Action News not to show her face.

“He had the mentality of a 10-year-old. He could take care of himself, if that makes sense, but with guidance, I guess. He was very gullible. He was very childish,” Moon recalled.

She believes this made him vulnerable on the evening of November 28, 2022.

She said Corey was in a group chat on social media earlier this month when things took a turn.

“People were threatening him on Instagram or something. And I said, ‘Why Corey, what did you do?’ He said he threatened to slap somebody. I said, ‘You can’t threaten to slap somebody,'” Moon explained.

On November 28, shortly after 7 p.m., police were called to G Street and Willard Street in Philadelphia’s Kensington neighborhood.

There they found Corey in front of a corner store with gunshot wounds. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

“I forgive completely, I forgive completely, because my son’s fate was already sealed and there is nothing I can do to change that, but I want justice,” Moon said.

The City of Philadelphia is offering a reward of up to $20,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible.

All you have to do is call the Citizens Crime Commission at 215-546-TIPS. All calls remain anonymous.

Since his death, Moon has founded an organization that supports families in need and raises awareness of the effects of gun violence.

The title is “Hope Beyond Firearms” and donations are already being collected to give to families this coming Christmas season.
