Costco’s new food court sandwich is topped with bacon jam

Costco’s new food court sandwich is topped with bacon jam

Bulk shoppers and meat-eating foodies, listen up: Costco’s food court just released a new chicken and bacon sandwich. To be clear, this double-meat debut doesn’t feature crispy bacon strips. Instead, the bacon comes in the form of a sweet and spicy bacon jam. News of the chicken and bacon beauty comes from a thread on the r/Costco subreddit. According to the original poster, the photo of the menu board was taken a week ago on August 4, so it’s unclear how long this new menu item has been available.

Another thread on the same Costco subreddit comes from a purported store employee with more detailed information on the new sandwich, including photos of the store’s deli department’s instructions on how to make it. According to the post, the chicken and bacon sandwich ($6.99) starts with Dijon mayonnaise spread on the bottom of a bun, which is then topped with sliced oven-roasted chicken breast, a slice of cheddar cheese, two slices of tomato, “Green Leaf Rib” lettuce, and finally the top half of the bun, which is spread with a spoonful of bacon chutney. Costco hasn’t released its proprietary recipe yet, but typically bacon jam is a combination of tender, diced bacon and sweet, caramelized onions rendered in bacon fat, all of which comes together in a sticky mixture of brown sugar, smoked paprika, and Worcestershire sauce.

According to fans in the comments section of the Reddit thread, the chicken and bacon sandwich is served cold and costs the same as Costco’s turkey sandwich. Some bemoan the calorie density (920 calories per sandwich), while others note the texture of Costco’s ciabatta bread and its tendency to overpower the fillings of other sandwiches on the food court menu — especially when untoasted, as the bread then tends to get a little dry. Overall, fans seemed less excited and more baffled by this new menu addition, instead calling for other discarded food court favorites to be added back to the menu.

Costco’s food court has been the focus of some heated press lately, and not just because of the viral cookie (which totally lives up to the hype, by the way). Costco’s sandwich sector, in particular, is leading the news cycle. In November 2023, Costco released a $2 breakfast sandwich that many fans called an exact copy of Starbucks’ Double Smoked Bacon, Egg & Cheddar Sandwich on a buttery croissant, and received rave reviews and instant popularity. Still, these sandwiches are part of Costco’s Kirkland brand, not the ready-to-eat food court, and come frozen. A year ago, Costco launched a controversial roast beef sandwich for $9.99, a high price that immediately spoiled the appetites of food court fans and drew tons of negative feedback. Time will tell if this newly introduced chicken and bacon jam combination will find a solid fan base or fall by the wayside like its similarly priced roast beef predecessor.
