Zapaca (Yankee Glide) and harness racing driver Steeven Genois won the $8,500 Open Trot at Vernon Downs on Saturday (24 August).
Wallet led the quarter at :26.2. He slowed down with a second quarter at :30.4 and led at :57.1 until halfway. Woodside Gabe (Leon Bailey) came flying down the backstretch, took the lead and led at 1:25.2 until three quarters, but then he took a break.
Zapaca ($10.60) took the lead down the homestretch and clocked 1:55.3 to win. Discus Hanover (Ron Harp) came home late to finish second. Sir Jesse (Jimmy Whittemore) was third.
Zapaca is a 7-year-old gelding owned by Devan Flood and trained by Gary Gibson. It was his sixth win of the season and he now has 17 career wins.

Leon Bailey and Chuck Connor Jr. had triple wins in driving. Claude Huckabone Jr. had a double win in driving practice.
Maximum Ideal (Chuck Connor Jr.) came in late to win the George Tackley Memorial Race in 1:53.4. The winner’s circle was packed with family and friends showing their love for the late George Tackley. Maximum Ideal is owned and trained by Margaret Spagnola.
