TOM TRYBA MEMORIAL GOLF TOURNAMENT: Patriots finish fourth in 70s class, second

EXETER – Pittston Area was the only team to have four players break the 80-point mark Monday at Fox Hill Country Club, helping the Patriots finish second among 13 complete teams in the annual Tom Tryba Memorial Tournament.

Lake-Lehman defeated Pittston Area 302-313, thanks to medalist Charlie Weidner, who shot 3 under par (68). Wyoming Area finished fifth with 324.

Nick Cook, Patrick Ruane, Andrew Nocito and Noah Gruber of Pittston Area all finished in the top 13 of the 76-player field.

Cook finished eighth with a score of 77.

“Staying on the fairway was the best thing for me,” said Cook, who suffered nothing worse than a bogey. “I only missed one or two shots all day.”

Ruane, who had shot under par and even par in his last two nine-hole conference matches, was alone in tenth place with a 78.

After avoiding bogeys in those two matches, Ruane’s Monday was more mixed, making up for two triple bogeys with four birdies.

“My short game is definitely a big part of it,” Ruane said of his improvement this season. “I’m more consistent with my irons, but it’s mostly putting.”

Nicoto and Gruber were part of a three-way tie for 11th place with 79 points.

Mario Belza led Wyoming Area with a 74 and finished tied for fourth place with three other players.

Reigning Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Class 2A state champion Nick Werner of Wyoming Seminary finished second with 69.

Ryan Roman of Dallas finished third with 73.

Joe Onda of the Wyoming area and Chris Scavo of the Pittston area tied for 20th place with 82 points.

Jeremy Layland’s 83 and an 85 from Aiden Argust or Mitchell Rusinchak completed the team score for the four-man Wyoming Area.

Kyle Franchetti scored 85 points for the Patriots, while Robbie Yatsko scored 87 points for the Warriors.
