The body of a 20-year-old woman was recovered in Grand Canyon National Park, marking the third death in a week, the National Park Service (NPS) said.
According to an NPS press release, 20-year-old Leticia A. Castillo of Albuquerque, New Mexico, first disappeared on August 3 after entering the national park.
After a search lasting several days, authorities discovered her body on Tuesday 150 feet below the canyon’s Twin Overlook.
A photo from the scene showed Castillo’s body being flown in by helicopter. Her body was transferred to the Coconino County coroner’s office, authorities said.

A cousin of Castillo posted on Facebook We remember the 20-year-old because he “lit up every room.”
“Leti, words cannot express how much we will miss you,” Alexis Hernandez wrote on Facebook. “I love you so much, Prima, and I will always cherish the time I got to spend with you. You brightened up every room you walked into.”
Castillo’s death is the third at the popular tourist destination this week and the 11th this year.
On July 31, Abel Joseph Mejia, a 20-year-old from North Carolina who was on a mission trip with his church, tripped over the edge of the South Rim. He fell 400 feet and died.

A NPS review of deaths A study of national parks between 2014 and 2019 found that hiking is the second deadliest recreational activity after driving, while drowning causes the second highest number of unintentional deaths after car accidents.
