That’s exactly what’s happening in Canada’s largest city: A Toronto police officer is making a very unusual suggestion to prevent a home burglary if one does happen.

According to Global News, Toronto police officer Marco Ricciardi attended a community meeting in the Greater Toronto Area’s Etobicoke neighborhood in March 2024. At the meeting, he suggested that residents leave their car keys near the front door to prevent burglaries.
To prevent a possible robbery at home, leave your key chains on your front door… They break into your house to steal your car. They want nothing else… Many of those arrested have weapons, and they are not toy weapons, but real weapons. They are loaded…

According to City News in Toronto, the police officer made the remark during a community meeting of concerned citizens as crime rates across Toronto have increased in recent years.

According to Toronto Police, car thefts and home burglaries have increased by more than 400% in the last year, which is a serious concern. A closer look at the Toronto Police Department’s public safety data portal shows that most of their serious crime indicators have increased compared to last year.

Needless to say, Toronto police are facing heavy criticism from Ontario residents as this odd advice does nothing to address the rising crime rate in the Toronto area. The New York Post has several examples of angry tweets and other social media messages where people are venting their frustration.
