CHICAGO (CBS) — A 21-year-old is fighting for his life after causing an accident with a stolen car, according to police.

According to police, the driver was traveling at a high rate of speed on Touhy Avenue in the 7600 block of West Touhy Avenue in the Edison Park neighborhood shortly after 10:30 p.m. Friday night while being pursued by a Chicago Police helicopter.

The stolen car then crashed into a building near Ottawa Avenue.

The driver was taken to Lutheran Hospital in critical condition with leg and spine injuries. Four other people who were in the stolen car were also taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

A man standing near the accident scene said his car was one of those affected.

“He hit my car at the corner of Milwaukee and Elston. He was driving like a madman, turned off his lights and drove into these innocent people,” said Edward Thomas.

The owner of the cleaning company in the affected building says he has been there for 20 years and is in the process of selling the building. The owner of a gym near the accident scene also said speed was an issue and that radar devices were installed in the area after a fatal accident several years ago.

According to police, a weapon was found at the crime scene.

Charges are still pending.
