Telegram boss Pavel Durov has announced an arrest by French police at an airport north of Paris.

Oga Durov bin dey was arrested after landing in a private jet for Le Bourget airport, France’s Tori Pipo reported.

According to authorities, the 39-year-old billionaire was arrested on a warrant for crimes related to the popular messaging app.

“We are looking for contact with P. Durov’s lawyer.”

Russian Foreign Minister Maria Zakharova asked on Telegram whether Western human rights NGOs were silent on the arrest of Oga Durov after she criticized Russia’s decision to create “Gbege” to support Telegram’s work for Russia in 2018.

Some Russian officials condemn the businessman’s arrest, saying it shows the West has double standards when it comes to freedom of expression and democracy.

X owner Elon Musk, who has faced heavy criticism for his moderation and material on his own social media site, posted repeatedly about this situation. He tagged one of his posts with the hashtag #freepavel and wrote: “POV: 2030 is Europe and you’re going to be executed for liking a meme.”

Telegram allows groups of up to 200,000 members. Critics argue that this facilitates the viral spread of misinformation and the sharing of conspiracy-theoretical, neo-Nazi, pedophile or terrorist content.

In the UK, the app came under scrutiny for hosting far-right channels that were used to organise violent riots in English cities earlier this month.

While Telegram does not remove some groups, overall its system for moderating extremist and illegal content is significantly weaker than that of other social media companies and messaging apps, cybersecurity experts say.
