Istanbul Airport once again tops the list of Europe’s busiest airports

Turkey’s Istanbul Airport once again topped the list of Europe’s busiest air traffic hubs, with an average of 1,510 flights per day, according to a recently published report by the European Organization for the Safety of Air Navigation (Eurocontrol).

During the week of August 12-18, IGA Istanbul remained the busiest airport, followed by Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam with 1,428 flights and Paris Charles De Gaulle Airport with 1,412 flights.

As one of the best connected airports in the world, Istanbul Airport often ranks at the top of the list with over 1,400 daily flights.

According to the report, another Turkish airport, Antalya Airport, made it into the top 10. With 1,034 daily flights, the Mediterranean air traffic hub ranks seventh, just behind London Heathrow, Frankfurt and Madrid Barajas.

Three of the ten largest airports (iGA Istanbul, Antalya and Rome) are currently handling traffic volumes that are higher than in 2019, according to Eurocontrol’s European Aviation Overview report.

Traffic volume at Istanbul Airport increased by 15% and at Antalya Airport by 3% compared to 2019, it said.

Both airports, as well as Sabiha Gökçen International Airport, also showed positive performance in the first half of the year, as industry data had previously suggested, as the sector recovered from pandemic-related restrictions.
