More than 12 years after the series ended on Disney Channel. The magic of Wizards of Waverly Place is being recreated for a new generation.

On Friday, Disney released a first look at the long-awaited sequel to the sitcom. Wizards Beyond Waverly Placeduring the premiere of Descendants – The Rise of RedThe two-minute video below shows Selena Gomez, who played the main character Alex Russo, accepting and almost longing for her past while her brother Justin (played by David Henrie) tries to avoid a repeat.

“This is where it all started,” Gomez tells Henrie in behind-the-scenes footage. “We’re home!”

Wizards of Waverly Place aired for four seasons from 2007 to 2012. The reboot, which premieres later this year on Disney Channel and Disney+, “follows a grown-up Justin Russo who has chosen to live a normal, mortal life with his family Giada, Roman and Milo,” according to the official series description. “When Justin’s sister Alex brings Billie home to seek help, Justin realizes he must brush up on his magical skills to mentor the wizard-in-training while balancing his everyday responsibilities – and securing the future of the wizarding world.”

Both Gomez, who appears in the first episode only, and Henri are executive producers. The cast includes Alkaio Thiele (as Roman Russo), Max Matenko (as Milo Russo), Taylor Cora (as Winter) and Mimi Gianopulos (as Giada Russo).

Another scene from the teaser shows the siblings talking about Billie, the newest sorceress, played by Janice LeAnn Brown. She played the young Rue in euphoria.

“Billie is rebellious and stubborn and sarcastic…” Alex warns her brother in the clip.

“Sounds like someone I know,” Justin replies.

“Ha ha,” his sister says sarcastically and the studio audience laughs. “I understand it too.”

Alex also visits the family hideout where the Russos learned and practiced their magic.

“This brings me back!” she says as she enters the room.

And there’s plenty of new magic when Billie scrambles an egg and turns someone invisible.

Whatever happens, the Only murders in the building Star is with Billie.

“We rebels have to stick together,” says Gomez.
