OTR restaurant owner is sad about break-in

OVER-THE-RHINE, Ohio (WKRC) – The door of a popular Over-the-Rhine restaurant is boarded up after two people broke in early Thursday morning.

Caught on Milkman’s security cameras, the perpetrators waited outside the Race Street restaurant at 4 a.m. After making sure the coast was clear, one of them threw a large rock at the front door. They tried to steal money from the cash register, but it was empty. They then stole alcohol and left through the back door.

“It’s a little scary in some ways. You think, ‘Oh my God, are they still there? They’re still out there. Is this going to happen again?'” said Kate Horner, general manager of Milkman.

Milkman has never been broken into in the two years since it opened, but Horner isn’t shocked that this happened.

“It’s simply because we have huge windows in the front and we’re working outside. There are a lot of people walking around all the time,” Horner said.

The City Gear next door was also recently broken into. Despite the recent break-ins, Frank Hailstock said he feels safe. His OTR Funplex is on the same block.

“As a Cincinnati resident, I find this area a thousand times better than it was when I was a child. Overall, I feel like it’s a safe area for my guests, myself and the residents,” Hailstock said.

Overall, Horner says she is grateful for the support she receives from the community.

“Everyone was saying, ‘Wow, I can’t believe someone would do that to you.’ A lot of people came to support us and still wanted our burgers and stuff. (That) isn’t going to stop us,” Horner said.

Cincinnati police said they are currently investigating the break-in. While they are aware of similar crimes in the community, they do not know if they are related. They ask anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at (513)-352-3040.
