Walmart recalls apple juice in 25 states due to elevated arsenic levels – CGWALL USA News

Walmart recalls apple juice: Walmart is recalling nearly 10,000 cases of its Great Value 8oz apple juice due to concerns about elevated levels of inorganic arsenic. The recall, which was initiated on August 15 and classified as a Class II recall by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on August 23, affects products sold in 25 states.

Recall details

The recalled apple juice, manufactured by Refresco Beverages US Inc., was sold in six-pack PET plastic bottles with UPC 0-78742-29655-5. These products have a best-before date of December 28, 2024. The recall includes Walmart locations in Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia and West Virginia.

Health risks and safety information

The FDA found that the apple juice contained inorganic arsenic levels of 13.2 parts per billion, exceeding the 10 parts per billion limit for apple juice set in June 2023. Arsenic, a naturally occurring mineral, can be toxic, especially when consumed in large amounts over a long period of time.

Possible health effects

Exposure to elevated levels of inorganic arsenic can have serious health consequences. Young children may experience adverse neurological effects such as learning disabilities and behavioral problems. Adults face risks such as skin disorders, increased risk of skin, bladder and lung cancer, and cardiovascular disease. Short-term exposure to high levels of arsenic can cause nausea, vomiting, bruising, and numbness or burning in the extremities.

Consumer advice

The FDA has advised consumers that while arsenic contamination is a concern, it does not necessarily mean that other foods should be avoided entirely. It is important that consumers eat a balanced diet and consume a variety of nutrient-dense foods from all food groups.

Action steps for affected consumers

Walmart is working to remove the affected apple juice from shelves and is asking customers who purchased these products to throw them away or return them to the store for a refund. For more details about the recall or to check if your product is affected, visit the Walmart website or contact the store where the juice was purchased.

This recall underscores the importance of monitoring food safety and adhering to recommended contamination limits to protect public health.
