Severely restricted or banned foods and beverages in the USA

Few things define a culture like food, and the United States is no exception. Whether it’s regional food traditions like collard greens and cornbread or the country’s loyalty to packaged macaroni and cheese, the U.S. is a place of seemingly endless culinary choices and indigenous and immigrant influences. Some foods, however, are virtually impossible to find in the States, and that’s because they’ve landed on the banned foods list.

Which foods are banned in the USA and why?

That’s right, there are certain foods that are eaten all over the world that are simply not allowed in the U.S. – often for health, safety, preservation, or controversial reasons. Interestingly, some bans have been lifted or relaxed over time.

In California, the sale of foie gras, which had been banned in 2004 on grounds of animal cruelty (and took effect in 2012), was temporarily suspended in 2015 before being allowed again, reflecting ongoing debates about ethics and gastronomy. In some cases, the Food and Drug Administration is responsible for keeping treats from crossing the border, but sometimes foods violate state laws or public opinion.

Where in the USA are certain foods banned and why?
