Smooth travel at the airport as the Burners arrive in Black Rock City

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) – Travel is running smoothly Sunday morning as Reno-Tahoe International Airport anticipates its busiest day since 2005.

The airport is preparing for about 20,000 passengers on Sunday.

Travelers to Burning Man ran into a snag on Saturday when rain on the beach closed the gates to Black Rock City. At the airport, many Burners waited a long time to board the Burner Express shuttle bus.

There are no queues on Sunday mornings.

“No, the weather is much better today and the gates are open, so the Burning Man buses are running much closer to the normal schedule,” said Nicolle Staten, the airport’s public affairs manager.

“Yesterday was busy, but today we can expect thousands more passengers,” Staten added.

The Burner Express pick-up and drop-off location is just north of the main terminal.

Most flights departed on time or almost on time, only a few were delayed by an hour or more.

Burning Man reported that the time from exiting the highway to reaching the gate to Black Rock City at 9 a.m. on Sunday was about an hour.

After Sunday, Monday and September 2nd are expected to be the busiest days for travel.

The Air Playa information desk is located in the main lobby of the terminal near the ski statue.

The airport made the following recommendations for travelers:

  • Arrive early: Passengers are strongly advised to arrive at least two hours prior to departure to allow for higher crowds, longer security lines and ongoing construction (including road construction on the airport’s Loop Road).
  • Avoid waiting at the curbside: Avoid waiting at the curbside and use the free waiting area to conveniently pick up passengers.
  • Oversized Vehicles: Please note that oversized vehicles are not permitted to park on airport property and there are certain height restrictions in place along the Loop Road. In some areas the restriction is as low as 13 feet.
  • Discover art: Passengers can get in the Burner spirit at the airport by visiting the latest exhibition, “Beyond Blackrock: A Global Burning Man Showcase,” at depARTures Gallery, which highlights five Burning Man events from around the world.
