Tesla engineer explains charging peculiarities at the Cybertruck’s socket

Tesla’s lead engineer for the Cybertruck explained the reason behind an interesting quirk after owners noticed they were unable to use the truck bed’s power outlets during certain charging sessions.

On Sunday, Wes Morrill, lead engineer on the Tesla Cybertruck, responded to users on X about why the truck bed’s power outlets and the vehicle’s onboard power cannot be used while charging. Morrill and some users clarified that this only happens when Supercharging is not being performed, such as when the vehicle is plugged in at a campsite. The engineer explained that this is related to the architecture of the AC/DC converter.

As for AC charging, the Cybertruck’s AC/DC converter, which converts AC utility power to DC to charge the battery, is the same device used for onboard power. Morrill also said it might be possible to use the converter for onboard power and charging at the same time, though he says that would require some development work.
