Grab your wands and maybe a sandwich or two. We take a first look at the sequel series Wizards Beyond Waverly Place. Unveiled today during the Disney Channel Premiere of Descendants: The Rise of Red, The first look not only offers a little taste of the upcoming series, but also a look behind the scenes of the old and new cast.

The table of contents for Wizards Beyond Waverly Place says the show will follow a now grown-up Justin Russo (David Henrie), who has decided to live a normal, mortal life with his family Giada, Roman and Milo. When Justin’s sister Alex (Selena Gomez) brings Billie (Janice LeAnn Brown) comes to his house asking for help, Justin realizes that he must brush up on his magical skills in order to mentor the wizard in training, while also going about his day-to-day duties and securing the future of the wizarding world.

In the preview, Gomez and Henrie reminisce about the set and talk about how much will change in the new series. The original series, Wizards of Waverly Placefollowed a family of wizards, the Russos, with David DeLuiseas Jerry Russo, the patriarch of the Russo family who introduces his three young children to the world of wizards. DeLuise will reprise his role as a guest star in Wizards Beyond Waverly Place. The original series also starred Maria Canals-Barrera, Jennifer Stone and Jake T. Austin. From the preview and series description, Justin will now take over Jerry’s role as a tutor to young wizards. His children seemed to have no idea about the world of magic until Billie literally burst into their lives.

The end of the original Wizards of Waverly Place Alex and Justin both became full-fledged wizards, although each family is only supposed to have one “family wizard” per generation, but now it seems Justin has given that up anyway to live a normal life with his family. He must now take on a similar role to his father, balancing a non-magical life as an outsider and an extraordinary wizard life, all while keeping his children and Billie out of trouble, both mortal and magical.
