“Update your passport photo”: The rise in airport delays due to cosmetic improvements

In her video, she described how six security guards dragged her into a room for “about an hour” to question her about the photo.

She told officers that her passport photo was taken nearly ten years ago and explained that she had undergone numerous plastic surgeries and cosmetic fillers that had changed her appearance.

After confirming her information, the security guard told Prophet, “This needs to be fixed because it’s not like you at all and is probably why you keep getting stopped.”

The comments section beneath her video was flooded with travelers sharing similar experiences and recounting their own safety setbacks.

One said: “Turkish immigration cameras catch the slightest change during passport control. I just had my nose checked and they keep asking questions.”

“This happened to me in Singapore! They interrogated me in a room and asked if I had ever had plastic surgery and had to produce pictures from before the filler treatment,” revealed another person.

Travel experts warn travelers that recent cases of appearance mismatches can lead to delays and even cancellations.

According to the Liverpool Echo, Gemma Brown, Head of Product at Travel Republic, stressed the importance of updating passport photos to comply with the required guidelines, especially for passengers who have undergone major cosmetic surgery such as a nose job, facelift, jaw correction or other procedures that have altered their basic facial features.

“When travelling, it is important to remember that your passport photo is used to clearly and distinctly identify you visually. If you have had cosmetic surgery since your passport photo was taken, this may slow down screening at the airport as you may look different compared to your photo.”

For anyone wondering what warrants a passport update – with or without Botox or fillers – especially if you’ve recently changed your appearance, Brown offers this advice: “In general, small changes like a new hairstyle, growing a beard or slight changes in weight don’t require a new passport.”
