PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — August is Black Business Month, and Honeysuckle Provisions in West Philadelphia wants to make a difference in its community – from farm to table.

The mutual love of chefs and owners Cybille St.Aude-Tate and Omar Tate was the beginning of a shared journey to share their passion for food and culture with others.

“It sounds cheesy, but it was love at first sight,” St.Aude-Tate said. “By June we were engaged. By August we were married, and by September we were working on opening Honeysuckle Provisions.”

Honeysuckle Provisions is an Afrocentric food cafe offering breakfast, lunch and catering using farm-sourced ingredients, and now serving dinner, with food that tells the story of Black fine dining.

“It’s really important to us to not only educate people about Black eating habits and the African diaspora, but also to understand how interconnected we all are through this food system,” said St. Aude-Tate.

The staff at Honeysuckle Provisions is more like family. Every dish they serve is an explosion of flavor. They are driven by the belief that chefs have a social responsibility beyond the kitchen.

“Having a store like ours that is so rich in community, culture and history that it is open and willing to share these foods with people is incredibly important and I think it at least allows people who look like us to take care of themselves by just being mindful of what they put in their bodies,” St.Aude-Tate said.

“We do more than just food and as a cultural marker, as a cultural representation of what this store is, it reflects not only what we eat but who we are and it helps convey the idea of what community can look like and who the people behind the space are,” Tate said.

They believe that this belief changes the community.

“It allows customers and neighbors of all ethnicities and backgrounds to come and enjoy us and everything we offer,” St.Aude-Tate said.
