‘Intentionally set’ fire destroys Renton’s Top of the Hill Quality Produce

Top of the Hill Quality Produce will remain closed until further notice after a fire destroyed the Renton grocery store early Saturday morning.

KOMO 4 News spoke with Renton Regional Fire spokesman Eric Autry, who said that after investigating the fire yesterday morning and into the afternoon, it was determined that the fire was intentionally set.

“At approximately 2:50 a.m., the Renton Regional Fire Department received sounds of an explosion and fire coming from the Top of the Hill Quality Produce building,” Autry said.

Numerous fire departments responded to the commercial building in the 5300 block of NE 4th St to assist in the firefighting effort.

When the crew arrived, the fire was upgraded to alert level 2. Due to the severe fire conditions, firefighters conducted an external attack.

About 35 minutes after the first fire alarm, part of the roof collapsed in the middle of the building.

The Renton Regional Fire Department said anyone with any information about the cause of the fire should contact police.

Top of the Hill Quality Produce issued the following statement on the fire:

On behalf of Jackie and Damu Maples, owners of Top of the Hill Quality Produce, we want to thank you for your overwhelming support following the devastating fire at their business. The outpouring of condolences – warm hugs early Saturday morning and the many messages on their blog, emails, phone calls and social media – have been a source of tremendous comfort during this difficult time. While Jackie and Damu cannot respond to every message personally, they are deeply grateful for every word of encouragement and the ongoing support you continue to offer them. Your thoughts and prayers give them the strength they need to face the difficult road ahead.

Top of the Hill Quality Produce has been a cornerstone of the Renton community for over 20 years, giving back in countless ways.

Now, as they face the uncertain road to rebuilding, many have asked how they can help. Although Jackie and Damu are not the ones asking for help, they have gratefully accepted the community’s generous offers of support during this time.

Anyone wishing to help with the rebuilding and restoration effort can donate on the Top of the Hill Quality Produce website. Click here.
