Justin Thomas qualifies for the Tour Championship on his way home

Justin Thomas qualifies for the Tour Championship on his way home

Justin Thomas will play in the Tour Championship this week, but it didn’t look like he would be playing when he completed the final round of the BMW Championship on Sunday.

The 30 players with the most FedEx Cup playoff points qualify for the Tour Championship. The former All-American from Alabama started the BMW Championship in 22nd place on Thursday, but when he sank a 6-foot par putt on the 72nd hole of the PGA Tour event on Sunday, he was outside the top 30.

“I’m just going home,” Thomas said after shooting a bogey-free 4-under 68 on Sunday at Castle Pines Golf Club in Castle Rock, Colorado. “I’m going to Jupiter (Florida). I don’t have to sit here all afternoon worrying about it. It sucks, but that’s the way I’ve found myself. I’m just going home happy, spending a couple of nights at home and then hopefully driving to Atlanta on Tuesday.”

Thomas will head to East Lake Golf Club for the Tour Championship after finishing 30th in the standings. He finished 39th at 2-over par at the BMW Championship and had late help despite being passed by eight golfers during the tournament.

After Thomas finished his round, Alex Noren, who was in fourth place on the tournament leaderboard, suddenly faltered and made bogey on the last three holes of his round.

Brian Harman made a double bogey on his last hole of the tournament.

Jason Day finished four strokes under par in the final round, conceding a triple bogey on hole 14 and a double bogey on hole 15 to finish over par.

Harman finished the day 31st in the FedEx Cup standings, Day 33rd and Noren 37th.

On Thursday, 30 golfers will compete in the Tour Championship in Atlanta for the first place prize of $25 million. The tournament’s starting stroke format means Thomas will start with a score of par and Scottie Scheffler, the highest-scoring player, will start at 10 under par.

Thomas won the PGA Tour Championship in 2017.

The top 50 players in the points standings played in the BMW Championship, and Keegan Bradley, who finished as No. 50, won the tournament, catapulting him to fourth place in the overall standings and into the Tour Championship field.
