Aiming high! Number of passengers departing from the city airport is increasing

The number of passengers leaving the city’s airport is increasing.

Norwich Airport continues to recover from the pandemic, welcoming 353,000 passengers last year – two percent more than the previous year.

The financial year figures cover the 12 months to the end of March 2024 and do not include Ryanair’s first flights from Hellesdon Airport, which began in April.

Ryanair has added 60,000 seats to the airport this summer, putting it on track to surpass its pre-Covid-19 passenger numbers of half a million.

Richard Pace, Managing Director of Norwich Airport, said: “We are delighted with the continued growth in passenger numbers at Norwich and the addition of new routes underlines our commitment to offering the region more choice and better connections and supporting hundreds of skilled jobs as a key aviation hub.”

The airport employs 224 people and also acts as a gateway to the southern North Sea for the offshore energy industry.

The figures contributed to a 15 per cent increase in passenger numbers at Norwich Airport’s parent company, Regional & City Airports (RCA), which recorded more than 1.75 million passengers at its airports during the year.

In addition to Norwich, the group also owns Bournemouth and Exeter airports and has a management contract for Solent Airport.

Ryanair, which operates routes from Norwich to Malta, Alicante and Faro, will continue to operate the Alicante route over the winter.

TUI also launched eight summer destinations earlier this year, with flights from Norwich to Cyprus, Corfu, Crete, Rhodes, Ibiza, Mallorca, Menorca and Turkey, in addition to all year-round trips to Tenerife.

In addition, there are twice-weekly flights to Jersey during the summer operated by Blue Islands, as well as year-round flights to Aberdeen with Loganair and to Amsterdam with KLM.
