The Port of Seattle and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport said over the weekend that there had been an “internet and web systems outage that is impacting some systems at the airport.”

The cause of the incident is not yet known, but the airport suspects it could be a cyber attack.

“This morning, the Port of Seattle experienced certain system outages indicating a possible cyberattack. The port has isolated critical systems and is currently working to restore full operations, but there is no estimated time for recovery yet,” Seattle-Tacoma International Airport wrote on its X account on August 25.

Due to the ongoing incidents, the airport urged passengers to check in with their partner airlines and arrive early.

Travelers were also asked to use their mobile boarding pass and handle their checked baggage through the airline’s apps for easier processing.

“Port teams continue to make progress in restoring systems to normal operation, but there is no estimated time for restoration,” the airport posted on X about 10 hours ago.

According to the company’s X-Post, the phone systems at the Port of Seattle’s maritime facilities were also affected by the outage.

The web and internet outage reminded many of the CrowdStrike IT outage in July, which affected millions of Microsoft devices around the world and left thousands of airline passengers stranded at airports as air travel was disrupted worldwide and airports switched to manual check-in processes.

However, the extent of the latest IT outage is not yet fully known. The perpetrators behind the alleged cyber attack have not been named either.
