Selena Gomez and David Henrie return in first look at Wizards Beyond Waverly Place

The Russos are back, but this time they’re not at Waverly Place!

On Friday, August 9, Disney gave a first look at the highly anticipated Wizards of Waverly Place Revival series entitled Wizards Beyond Waverly Place. In a touching behind-the-scenes video of production, stars of the original series Selena Gomez and David Henrie prepare to reprise their roles on the popular Disney Channel show.

Starring Henrie and Janice LeAnn Brown, the sequel series is about “the adult Justin Russo (Henrie), who has decided to live a normal, mortal life with his family Giada (Mimi Gianopulos), Roman (Alkaio Thiele) and Milo (Max Matenko),” according to the official synopsis.

The synopsis continues: “When Justin’s sister Alex (Gomez) brings Billie home for help, Justin realizes he must brush up on his magical skills to mentor the sorceress-in-training while also managing his everyday duties – and securing the future of the wizarding world.”

The first look begins with a producer introducing Gomez, 32, and Henrie, 35, as they first arrive on set. As she hugs Henrie onscreen, the Rare Beauty founder thinks, “This is where it all started. We’re home.”

As Henrie shows his fans the Russos’ new house, he jokes about how things “have changed” and “the Russos have grown.” In the family kitchen, Henrie happens to run into Brown, whom he introduces as the lead character in the new series.

“Billie is rebellious and stubborn, sarcastic,” Alex tells Justin in a pilot clip. When he points out that she “sounds like someone I know,” the Russo family wizard responds with a grimace, “Haha, like me, I get it.”

The clip switches to Henrie addressing fans at the series’ first live recording and sharing his intentions regarding the revival of the popular series.

“Who remembers the original Wizards of Waverly Place?” he asks to cheers from the crowd. “We wanted to recreate that magic for a new generation.”

As in the original series, the new characters find themselves in tricky situations where magic is involved. From dodging wand lights in a giant pumpkin to zapping burritos to making Justin’s children semi-invisible, fans have a lot to look forward to as Billie experiences a whole range of magical situations.

Despite the new additions, some things never change. As Alex, Justin and Billie enter the family hideout, Alex smiles and remarks, “This brings back memories.”

Finally, the series’ original theme song, Gomez’s “Everything Is Not What It Seems,” plays, taking viewers through a montage of the exciting new storylines they can expect. The clip features shocking moments, tender embraces between Gomez and Brown, and a cameo from David DeLuise, who returns to his role as Russo family patriarch Jerry Russo.

“We’re back!” Gomez says before Brown finishes, “In style!” The first look ends with Alex twirling her wand and Justin teasing, “Still got it.”
