Walmart recalls apple juice sold in several states

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, approximately 9,535 8-ounce cases of Great Value Apple Juice sold by Walmart Inc. have been recalled because they contain inorganic arsenic above the limit set by industry guidelines. The affected juices were manufactured by Refresco Beverages US Inc.

The recall, originally announced on August 15, has now been upgraded to Class II by the FDA, meaning a product may cause temporary or medically reversible side effects. Health consequences or the likelihood of serious adverse effects on health is low.

According to the agency, the affected apple juices were found to contain arsenic levels of 13.2 parts per billion, while the agency’s industry guidelines specifically for apple juice state that the upper limit for inorganic arsenic should be 10 parts per billion.

The affected 100% apple juice is supplied in packs of 6 in PET plastic bottles, has the UPC number 0-78742-29655-5 and is good for at least December 28, 2024 CT89-6.

The affected product was distributed in Walmart stores in various states, including Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Michigan, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia and West Virginia.

Citing current research, the FDA states that inorganic arsenic is more dangerous than organic arsenic.

Exposure to inorganic arsenic has been associated with adverse human health effects, including cancer, diabetes, birth defects, and cardiovascular and neurodevelopmental disorders.

Short-term exposure to inorganic arsenic can cause nausea, vomiting, bruising and numbness or a burning sensation in the hands and feet, while long-term exposure can lead to skin diseases, an increased risk of skin, bladder and lung cancer, and cardiovascular disease.

In a similar recall, Pure Brands of California recalled PureFog Juice Liquid, sold exclusively on Amazon.com, in March because of the risk of mold infection. The recalled fog liquid was past its expiration date and posed a risk of respiratory or other infections in people with weakened immune systems, damaged lungs or a mold allergy.
