A five-year-old boy has died as a result of an accidental gunshot wound he inflicted on himself.

According to police, Brooks Thomas Wilson found a 9mm gun in the back of his home on Thursday (August 22) and fired a single shot at his head.

According to ABC News, Lt. Mike Wall of the Santaquin Police Department said his parents and siblings were home at the time but were not in the room with him.

He further stated that his family tried to resuscitate him while emergency services did their best to save the little boy. His death was confirmed at the scene of the accident.

Authorities do not suspect any foul play and no charges are currently being brought against his parents, the Daily Mail reported.

According to Fox 13, there are no laws in Utah that penalize a person for failing to secure their firearm and leaving it unattended with an unsupervised minor.

There are also no state regulations regarding gun storage or the use of locks. However, investigators are looking into how he might have gotten the gun – which is currently unknown.

According to the Daily Mail, Lt. Wall also declined to comment on whether and how the weapon was secured.

His family has set up a GoFundMe page in Brooks’ memory. His relative Spencer is organizing the fund to “support our family during this time. All contributions will be used to cover funeral expenses.”

They wrote: “Brooks was always a happy and adventurous boy and we will always remember his loving nature.

“If you would like to support our family during this time, all contributions will be used to cover funeral expenses. We are grateful to know that we will be reunited with him.”

The Wilson and Hunsaker family also released a statement on Friday (August 23), saying: “This heartbreaking incident has taught us difficult lessons and we deeply regret that it happened this way. Our hearts are shattered and we hope that the loss of our family reminds us how quickly life can change.”

His obituary continued that Brooks “lived life to the fullest and always wore his heart on his sleeve,” and “his inquisitive nature reflected a deep desire to learn and to help with chores around the house and with his father’s work in the garage.”

According to the Daily Mail, Wall said the family was “obviously devastated,” adding: “Obviously this is a shock to the community. It’s always a good reminder of how quickly things can happen and how quickly accidents can happen.”

UNILAD has asked Santaquin police for further comment.
