Huntsville International Airport expects record-breaking Labor Day weekend

Huntsville International Airport expects record-breaking Labor Day weekend

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) – Labor Day is just one week away. If you’re planning on flying out of Huntsville International Airport for vacation, there are a few things passengers should know to make the flight as stress-free as possible.

Airport officials told WAFF 48 News they are expecting record numbers for Labor Day weekend, with as many as 20,000 passengers flying out between Friday and Monday.

Although they don’t know how many seats will be filled, they firmly believe that the passenger record of previous Labor Day weekends will be broken.

With such a potentially large number of travelers, they want to inform everyone about ongoing projects that could impact your airport experience.

The most important project with potential impact on passengers is the renovation of one of the toilets in the station hall.

Construction work has already begun on the toilet next to Gate 4. Depending on the day, the toilet may or may not be open.

To prepare, Mary Swanstrom of Huntsville International recommends that everyone make a pit stop at the restroom before entering the TSA.

“We have some construction projects going on around our airport, which is very exciting,” Swanstrom said. “Some of it is in the concourse and that will impact travelers.”

“We recommend that you prepare in advance and make a pit stop at the restrooms directly outside the TSA across from the 4 Points Sheraton. Make this pit stop because the restrooms in the middle of the concourse may be closed during renovations.”

As part of the renovation, the toilets will be modernized and doubled in size. In addition, two family toilets and a separate breastfeeding room for nursing mothers will be added.

“They may be closed as some of these renovations take place over the next few months, and they will definitely be closed during phase two, so just plan ahead,” Swanstrom said.

“Know where the restrooms are located, both outside the TSA and at Gate 7.”

In addition to the expected construction, Swanstrom said passengers should also expect a busy airport on Labor Day weekend. If you’re flying out, Swanstrom recommends some tips from the TSA:

  1. To prevent unknown items from getting on the boat as stowaways, start packing with an empty bag.
  2. If you have any questions about what is prohibited, check the TSA website before you start packing.
  3. Arrive at the airport 90 minutes to 2 hours before your scheduled arrival time.
