Massachusetts chain stops selling tobacco in over 400 stores

Massachusetts is a great place to live. Residents and visitors have the choice between city and country living, numerous restaurants and, of course, plenty of shopping.

Massachusetts is home to a variety of independent retailers, from bookstores to sporting goods to gift shops. While small and family-run businesses make up an important part of the state’s economy, large supermarkets also have their place in Massachusetts.

One of the most well-known grocery retailers in Massachusetts is Stop & Shop. The chain currently operates 125 stores throughout the Bay State. Although the company just announced the closure of over 30 locations, the supermarket still has a strong presence throughout the state.

In addition to the store closures, Stop & Shop just made another major announcement, this time regarding a product they are permanently removing from their shelves.

Stop & Shop announces cessation of tobacco sales

Today, the grocer announced plans to stop selling all tobacco products in all stores in Massachusetts, as well as stores in Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York and New Jersey.

Company President Gordon Reid announced that the change will take effect immediately, effective Saturday, August 31.

Our responsibility as a grocer extends far beyond our shelves. We are committed to taking bold steps to help our employees, customers and communities work toward better health outcomes.
