Detroit Lions place Emmanuel Moseley on injured list

The Detroit Lions placed cornerback Emmanuel Moseley on the injured list and kept Christian Mahogany on the non-football illness list, it was reported Monday. Those were the first two roster moves the team made ahead of Tuesday’s 4 p.m. cut deadline.

Moseley suffered a torn pectoral muscle in the first of two joint practices between the Lions and the New York Giants. This injury requires a long-term recovery and will keep him out indefinitely.

The Lions do not yet have a timetable for his return, but expect his absence to be longer. Under new NFL rules, teams can place up to two players on the injured list before roster cuts and then make them eligible to return to the team. Previously, players placed on the injured list before roster cuts were out for the rest of the season or had to be released with injury compensation before they could return to the team.

It was an unfortunate development for Moseley, who had suffered season-ending injuries in each of the previous two seasons. He had been recovering from his most recent injury, a torn ACL suffered in Week 5 against Carolina last year, to put himself in a position to compete for a starting job in Detroit’s revamped secondary.

He competed with Amik Robertson and Ennis Rakestraw, among others, for the starting spot as nickelback.

Mahogany was sidelined for the duration of training camp. He missed the first three weeks due to illness and only recently returned to the facility. Since his return, he has been working with the strength training staff to get back into shape.

Because Mahogany remains on the NFI list, he will miss the first four games but may return after Detroit’s Week 5 bye.
